Abrasives

Abrasives are extremely common across multiple industries and are used very extensively in a wide variety of industrial, domestic, and technological applications. There are many different types of abrasives as the physical and chemical composition of abrasives as well as the shape of the abrasive can vary a great deal. An abrasive is a material that is used to shape or finish an item through rubbing which results in that item being worn away or shaped using friction.

Some abrasives we sell at Commerce Hose & Industrial Products are used to polish, resulting in a smooth, reflective surface. Other types of abrasives are used to roughen an already smooth surface, there are many different finish textures that can be achieved with abrasives. Industrial Valves

The industrial valves sold at Commerce Hose & Industrial Products are devices that control the flow and pressure of liquids, gases, and slurries within a larger system. Industrial valves are a key component in many machines that are used on a daily basis, they can perform a variety of functions for many different industries. Industrial valves (also known as regulators) can vary in size, design, and function. Typically at Commerce Hose & Industrial Products, we categorize industrial valves by either their specific function or control mechanism.

Types of Industrial Valves:

The three common valve functions include stopping and starting flow, throttling/controlling flow, and acting as a non-return check for flow.

  • Stop/Start valves are used for systems that do not need the flow throttled. The valve opens to allow the flow and closes to stop flow.
  • Throttle or control valves control the speed and capacity of flow through the system.
  • Non-return or check valves control the direction of flow. Flow in the desired direction opens the valve, while flow in the oppose direction forces the valve closed. These valves are important for preventing backflow to systems in applications such as wastewater management.

There are three common types of mechanisms that help control flow through a valve.

  • Linear motion valves use a closure member that moves in a straight line to allow, stop or throttle the flow. The closure device could be a disc, slat or flexible material, like a diaphragm.
    • Gate Valves – The valve is completely opened when the disk is removed from the flow stream.
    • Check Valves – The disk moves perpendicular to the seat to open or close the flow so the annular space between the disk and seat ring gradually changes.
    • Pinch Valves – The pinching mechanism, a bar or gate, is lowered onto the valve body to cut off the flow through the system.
    • Globe Valves – The disk moves perpendicular to the seat to open or close the flow so the annular space between the disk and seat ring gradually changes.
    • Diaphragm Valves – The disk is flexible and seals with the seat in an open area at the top of the valve body.
  • Rotary motion valves rotate a disc or ellipse about an angular or circular shaft extending across the diameter of an orifice. Quarter turn valves will be in their fully open or fully closed state after a 90° turn of the stem.
    • Butterfly Valves – The flow control element is on either a vertical or horizontal axis and is opened when the handle is rotated 90 degrees and closed when the valve is turned an additional 90 degrees.
    • Plug Valves – The disk is a solid tapered or cylindrical plug with a bored passage at the right angle to the longitudinal axis of the plug. When open, the plug lines up with the inlet and outlet port of the valve body.
    • Ball Valves – It uses a ball shaped disk with a hole in it. When the valve is opened the hole of disk is turned in-line with the direction of the flow. When the valve is shut, the ball is rotated so that the hole is perpendicular to flow direction.
  • Pressure Related
    • Reducing Valves – Automatically reduces supply pressure to a preselected pressure.
    • Relief Valves – A relief valve opens slowly as the pressure increases about the set-point and only opens as necessary.
    • Safety Valves – A safety valve rapidly opens as the pressure setting is reached and will stay open until the pressure is lower than the actuating pressure set-point.

Types of Casters

  • Stem Casters are an assembly with a wheel, or several, wheels mounted onto a fork, with a stem for attaching it to the bottom of an object. The stem is what sets it apart from other casters. The stem casters at Commerce Hose & Industrial Products are used to provide mobility to an otherwise stationary item and are typically made with polyurethane, a soft rubber, caster wheels which will not scratch or mark up floors.
  • Plate Casters contain a wheel with a plate on top for simple mounting. These types of casters have the ability to carry more weight than stem mount casters. The staff Commerce Hose & Industrial Products recommend plate casters for heavier applications.
  • Leveling Casters are designed for easy moving and level setting machines. They can be used for various applications such as chairs, shop vacuums and service carts and can be switched back from mobile to stationary nearly instantly. The staff Commerce Hose & Industrial Products recommend leveling casters for carts that will be mainly stationary but will need to be moved from time to time.
  • Pneumatic and Solid Rubber Casters are made up of materials that allow for low-speed movability for your more fragile materials. This type of caster is shock-absorbent because it is more cushioned than other casters. Commerce Hose & Industrial Products recommend casters with pneumatic wheels when moving items over grass or gravel.
  • Side Mount Casters have a vertical mounting plate that can be attached to equipment, furniture, and many other types of items to make moving those items much easier. Lubricants

Industrial lubricants will often generate and transmit energy, reduce or transmit driving forces, generate cooling or compressed air and can play an important role in most production facilities.

Most production lines require industrial lubricants in order to stay efficient and run smoothly, each application requiring a different lubricant for its specific application. At Commerce Hose & Industrial Products, we take multiple components into consideration when we recommend a lubricant, the machinery being the most important portion to consider. We also take your facility’s processes and current system into concern as well. As always, safety is our first priority. Types of Lubricants:

Food Grade Greases

The food grade greases at Commerce Hose & Industrial Products are often used in Bakeries, Food Packaging, Paper/Box Plants, and areas with High Temps and Steam. Food grade grease provides friction, wear, water, and stain resistance for gaskets, “O” rings, pump bearings, brushings, conveyors, and equipment where petroleum products and other organics would contaminate. Some food grade greases are even Kosher.

Food Grade Oils

Synthetic Food Grade Oils do not combine with water so it can be used for pumps, gear boxes, and hydraulic systems. Clear, non-staining oil is approved for processing kosher foods. It’s also approved for direct food contact, food grade machinery, food grade penetrating oil, and general food grade. This is the most common purchased food grade lubricant.

Green Lubricants

Environmentally-friendly greases are made from plants with ricin oil as the lubricant base. Green lubricants are an alternative to traditional lubricating greases that are typically much more damaging to the environment.

PFPE Lubricants

The PFPE lubricants at Commerce Hose & Industrial Products are engineered for applications where heat, chemicals, solvents, corrosion, toxicity, flammability, and service life can present lubrication complications or difficulties.

Silicone Lubricants

Silicone Lubricant typically contains a higher concentration of silicone than other industrial lubricants, allowing for a longer-lasting lubrication. Its clear, non-evaporating formula eliminates wear from constant friction and is safe and non-staining. Silicone lubricant also doesn’t accumulate dust or dirt.

Stainless Steel Fasteners

The industrial fasteners at Commerce Hose & Industrial Products are high-quality, stainless steel fasteners that can be used in a variety of applications across multiple industries. We prioritize the quality of our fasteners because they need to be able to withstand a number of weather and chemical elements as well as last a long time. Some refer to industrial fasteners as permanent fasteners because of their shelf life.

When it comes to fasteners, it’s important to understand the basics so that you know what type of industrial fastener you need for your project. Oftentimes in the industry we will use the words ‘industrial screws’ and ‘industrial bolts’ interchangeably.

However, there are a few differences: A bolt is a fastener like a screw, but it is held in place either by a nut or a threaded hole on the other side of the bolt.

The most common types of industrial bolts include:

  • Hex bolts, which are primarily used in machinery and construction.
  • Leg bolts, which are large wood screws with hex heads that are used in wood construction and landscaping.
  • Carriage bolts, which have smooth, rounded heads with a square section to pull deeply into a material to stop any spinning during installation.
  • Eye bolts, which have a circular loop on one end so that a rope or chain can be attached to it.
  • U-bolts, which are formed in a u shape and are used to affix piping or other objects to round surfaces.
  • Studs, which are bolts without ends and threaded on both ends.

Pneumatic Tubing & Fittings

Pneumatic fittings are parts used to connect sections of pipe, tube, and hose in pneumatic (pressurized gas) systems. Compared to hydraulic fittings, pneumatic fittings are typically characterized by tighter seals and lower pressure requirements. They are frequently used in pneumatic logic control systems and instrumentation. Pneumatic tube fittings create connections and filter air in pneumatic systems. Pneumatic inline and tee filters remove unwanted particles from airflow.

It is important to distinguish what type of vessels are being connected in the system to determine what fittings are appropriate.

Types of Pneumatic Tubing

  • Hoses are flexible vessels that are constructed of multiple layers of different materials. Fittings for hoses are often not permanent, since the hose itself is often replaced in time due to wear.
  • Pipes are rigid vessels constructed of one solid material. Generally, pipes are defined by their inner diameter dimension.
  • Tubes are fairly rigid vessels constructed of one solid material. Generally, tubes are defined by their outside diameter dimension.

Types of Connections

Pneumatic fittings are attached via a number of different connection methods, each with its own conveniences and advantages.

Ball and Sleeve Fittings

Ball and sleeve fittings connect an outer sleeve to an inner-ball fitting. The sleeve retracts to connect and disconnect the two ends of the fitting. Some ball and sleeve fittings function as push-to-connect fittings which are convenient for applications requiring frequent disconnection and re-connection of the hose section.

Compression Fittings

  • Standard compression fittings use metal gaskets, rings, or ferrules which form a seal on the vessel through compression. The compression is typically made by tightening a nut onto the fitting over the piping and ferrule, compressing and securing the vessel inside. Standard compression fittings do not require tools to assemble, making them convenient for quick field installations.
  • Bite-type fittings are compressive fittings with a sharpened ferrules that “bites” the vessel when compressed and provides the seal. Bite-type fittings, like standard compressive fittings, require no special tools to assemble, but provide a stronger, higher pressure connection.
  • Mechanical grip fittings are two-ferrule assemblies. The back ferrule grips the vessel while pressing up against the front ferrule, which spring-loads the front ferrule and creates a seal between the piping and fitting
    body. These fittings can be reassembled multiple times without damaging components or piping. They have good resistance to mechanical vibration.
  • Flare fittings consist of a body with a flared or coned end. Special flaring tools are used to install the vessel inside the flared end, providing a deep seal. Flare fittings can handle higher pressures and a wider range of operating parameters than standard compression fittings.

Crimp Fittings

Crimp fittings involve placing hose over a tubular end and crimping against it with a sleeve, ring, or crimp socket. These fittings typically require crimping tools or machines to make the connections.

End Fittings

End fittings provide specific surfaces for connecting vessels in pneumatic systems.

  • Clamp ends are fittings which allow hoses or tubes to be clamped over the part.
  • Plain ends are fittings with surfaces which allow pipes or tubes to be connected by adhesive, solder, welding, or other permanent means.

Push-to-Connect

Push-to-connect fittings have ends that are designed to accept tubing by pushing it into the end. These fittings typically disconnect via some type
of collar retraction. These connections are convenient for sections of the system requiring frequent disconnection and re-connection.

Threaded Fittings

Threaded fittings have screw threads (built-in grooves) on their inner (female) or outer (male) surfaces designed to accept connections with matching threads. Threads which provide a simple connection but no guaranteed seal are called straight threads. Tapered threads are designed to provide a tight seal which is important for pneumatic applications. These precise threads create a “dry fit”, meaning they seal without the need for an additional sealant, which is important in applications where sealant addition could cause contamination or corrosion.
